Essential oils are now so popular you can find them and buy them almost anywhere. However all essential oils being sold are not the same because they can be diluted with chemicals. The chemicals cannot be detected by smelling the oil as they do not create any detectable different smell. So unless you are a “nose” you will not be able to tell quality oils from the non-quality oils. The telling is in their performance and if the oils you are buying are not giving you the results that are in the literature about essential oils then you probably need to find another source.
Gary Young, N.D., tells a story about being in Europe with the express purpose of buying good essential oils. They brought him the oils at least four different times, presenting four different levels of purity and quality. The last choice they brought to Gary Young was the best quality oil. Gary Young can tell the quality of an oil, by smelling the oils. He is what is considered in Europe - a nose. This is a highly developed skill and he has been tested many times with amazing accuracy. The seller told Gary Young that he was the first American that could tell the difference between the poor quality oil and the pure oil. Gary Young has studied essential oils and their properties in many countries throughout the world and he is able to tell the constituents or properties in an oil because he has trained his brain (nose), to detect the differences. Young Living also has their oils tested by independent laboratories for purity and quality. This is why I trust Young Living for all of our essential oil needs.
Distillation temperatures and times are of utmost importance in obtaining the best quality essential oils. For instance Cypress oil needs to be distilled for 24 hours in order to acquire all the constituents that are beneficial in Cypress. Typically, Cypress oil is quickly distilled due to the desire to cut costs and increase profits. It will smell the same, but it will not have all the constituents that it could have and it will not address the body’s needs as well as a high quality Cypress oil that has been properly distilled.
Young Living also is concerned with the future availability of oils. Some of the farms in Europe that have been depended upon for many many years are now not able to produce the plants that produce quality oil. Young Living plants many of their own crops to distill for essential oils. Young Living uses no pesticides or herbicides on their land or crops.
